Some travel coffee mugs are well known for quality. Thermos for one is a brand that has been around for many years providing quality products that have been designed for portable food and beverage storage. Although there are many companies who make quality products on par with Thermos they don't have the same brand recognition as Thermos. That doesn't however mean they aren't as good, you just need to know what features are best to look for.
Overall the thermal insulation in the walls of insulated mugs is where most of the heat retention occurs. A travel mug that is well insulated typically has rather thick walls and probably at least two layers on insulation. Despite the fact that many travel mugs aren't that heavy you can usually feel the difference between a travel mug which is poorly insulated versus one that is well insulated. The well insulated mug tends to be a bit heavier and the walls often appear thicker.
One other big difference between travel mugs that hold their temperature versus those that don't is that the lids on good tumblers and mugs are also insulated and they seal extremely well. Usually the best travel mugs are virtually leak proof. When beverage is in the container and it is sealed it is very unlikely that the drink will leak or drip out. This shows that the seal is tight and implies that air is less likely to escape as well.
If you have experience with a travel coffee mug that doesn't retain heat very well chances are good you have a mug with thin insulated walls and possible a poorly designed lid. Find a quality mug that won't leak and you find a much better mug that won't let your coffee go cold any time soon. The best mugs are usually a bit more expensive than cheap travel coffee mugs but the price differential is not that great. Simply moving from a ten dollar price range to a twenty dollar price range will probably score you a much better travel mug than you've ever had before.
