Coffee Tumblers - Why You Can't Live Without One

!±8± Coffee Tumblers - Why You Can't Live Without One

Some people, like me, cannot begin the day without coffee.

If your day basically starts with your commute to work, then taking your coffee with you in the car is a likely option, particularly if you have a coffee mug designed for this purpose. Coffee mugs which are used in cars are often shaped to be more stable, with a wider bottom, or they are designed to fit neatly into the drink tray of a car.

Take-out coffee cups are also designed to fit into your car's drink tray, and, hopefully, the cup comes with an insulting extra layer, so you don't risk burning yourself.

Additionally, you should have a lid properly placed on any coffee cup which will ride with you in your car, since a sudden move could force the liquid to overflow.

Most people prefer to drink their coffee hot, or at least warm, so if your commute is rather long, you might choose to take your coffee in an insulated mug or thermos, which will not let your coffee get cold. Many insulated mugs are built to be very sturdy, and have special mouth pieces, just in case they are dropped. These are often called tumblers precisely for that reason. The good news is that if you drop a coffee tumbler, and you have closed the lid correctly, you will not spill hot coffee on yourself or on your car seat. And probably save yourself thousands in insurance and hospital bills

Insulated travel mugs and thermoses can also be used to keep drinks cold. On scalding days, when you're stuck in a traffic jam, it is a real relief to take sip of a cold drink. Also, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to be dangerously high if the car is parked in the sunshine. A thermos or insulated mug will keep your water or cool drink at a refreshing temperature.

One of the advantages of a well designed travel mug, is that they are often lined with a non-slip surface, so that the cup does not slip out of your hand or out of the cup holder. Some particularly well designed liquid containers are very stable, with a weighted bottom, and some other features like ergonomic handles and mouth pieces. While you are driving, always use only a coffee mug or cup which is appropriate for this purpose. This way, you will protect yourself and your vehicle, and avoid accidents.

Why Large Travel Mugs Need Thermal Insulation

!±8± Why Large Travel Mugs Need Thermal Insulation

Thermal insulation in the walls of a travel mug is quite normal. The reason for that has to do with the amount of hot drink these types of mugs carry. Most people simply don't drink hot coffee fast enough to get away with not having an insulated cup or mug. Although travel containers are meant first and foremost to keep your drinks in your cup rather than on your shirt quality thermal insulation is a good feature to have.

As a rule of thumb it worth keeping in mind that the larger your container the less likely you are going to be able to drink your hot coffee before it goes cold. There is a larger surface of your mugs wall where heat can escape, the top of the mug is usually wider and that give more opportunity for heat to rise and escape, and frankly it takes longer to drink larger quantities meaning you have more time for the heat to escape as well. Basically the larger your coffee mug the more important it is to have high quality insulation.

Thermal insulation in travel coffee mugs definitely adds to the price tag of the mug but it also adds to the quality of the mug and the overall user experience too. While a cheap travel mug may be poorly insulated, light, and very affordable the best travel mug will be safer to use, less likely to leak, more likely to keep your drinks hot or cold for as long as you need them to retain their temperature, and generally more enjoyable to own.

Another reason why travel mugs should be better insulated the larger they come is because travel mugs go outside while ceramic mugs and basic coffee cups do not. In fact many small plastic travel mugs are just used for 20 minute car rides to and from the office whereas many high end tumblers are used outside on a more rigorous basis. During the warm summer months this may not make much of a difference but for someone walking around outside in the winter a well insulated thermal coffee mug will be much better for your drinks than a cheap coffee mug with little to no insulation - the weather will simply cool everything off to quickly unless you drink uncomfortably fast.

Most travel mugs come in sizes of 10 ounces to 16 ounces but there are some larger 24 ounce and 32 ounce mugs on the market as well. Definitely if you buy something in this size range it's worth paying more money for a better insulated mug. The larger containers are usually more expensive to begin with so it may be tempting to buy a cheap thermos but the higher quality items will be much better money spent.

Choosing the Best Travel Mug

!±8± Choosing the Best Travel Mug

Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are popular beverages. When you are on the go, each of these requires a means of transportation. What should you look for in a travel mug? How do you choose the best travel mug?

Here are four qualities to consider when looking for a travel mug:

Insulation Qualities

In general, metals retain consistent temperatures longer than plastic, and double-walled mugs will as well. Plastics can also retain odors and stains, which is less likely with metal mugs.

Size

Most travel mugs hold sixteen ounces and up, large enough for most needs. However, if you are planning to take the mug in the car, make sure the bottom is small enough to fit in your cup holder. Older cars tend to have smaller cup holders, and mugs with a chunky base will not fit.

The Lid

Does the lid close? Cheaper mugs have a hole for drinking and are not spill-proof. How spill-proof is it? The best travel mugs have some kind of locking device, complete with a seal, to intercept being knocked over and guard against car bumps. Does it require too much work to open? Some thermoses, for example, require that you unscrew the lid to drink, which is not safe when driving.

Style

Do you like the look of sleek stainless steel? Will a more utilitarian mug do? Other than looks, consider whether or not you would like a handle, but be aware that two mugs with handles may not fit side-by-side in a car's cup holder.

Here are some recommended mugs:

Zak City Perk Belly Mug

This is a 14 ounce mug, and retails for . The wide base is stable, keeps drinks warm, and has a good lid, but is not useful for cold drinks.

Planetary Designs Tumbler Mug

This is a 16 ounce mug, and it retails for . It keeps hot and cold drinks at their particular temperature and is available in a variety of colors. The lid is looser than others.

Thermos Raya Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler

At 16 ounces, it will hold plenty, and retails for only . It contains useful rubber grips on the sides for good insulation. It is tall and the thin design can be tipped more easily.

Contigo AutoSeal Stainless Steel Travel Mug

This is another 16 ounce mug, which retails for .99. It has good insulation and a leak-proof lid. However, the lid is hard to clean.

So, which is the best travel mug?

The sleek Contigo AutoSeal Stainless Steel Travel Mug will keep hot drinks warm for hours and cold ones even longer. It has a no-spill lid and lives up to its AutoSeal name, resealing after you have taken a drink. The only drawback is that you must hold the release button while drinking, which is not much of an issue with today's multitaskers.

Can A Travel Mug Keep Coffee Hot All Day Long?

!±8± Can A Travel Mug Keep Coffee Hot All Day Long?

A high quality travel mug is something that not everybody opts to spend their money on. Everyone tends to have one or two basic travel mugs sitting around the house and if they are anything like me they probably cycle through new cheap tumblers all the time. Sometimes a cheap mug is lost, sometimes it's phased out because it isn't comfortable to use, a lot of the time however it is replaced by a "better" cheap coffee mug which is better able to keep coffee hot longer and stop leaks and drips from happening.

The simple fact of the matter is that almost all of these cheap coffee mugs work the same. They have thin insulation and cheap lids. Some of these lids are better capable of stopping leaks and spills than others but generally speaking they are all similar. If you want a good mug that will not leak air or liquid then you have to pay a little more money. Similarly if you want a mug that is capable of keeping your drinks hot for five hours or more you have to branch out of the to range products and pay a little more. There are coffee mugs which will keep your coffee hot all day long; they are not as rare as you might think.

One of the best travel mugs is actually a thermos brand mug. Thermos has been around for many years and has built a great reputation and for good reason. The top of the line thermos mugs are designed with thick thermal insulation in their mugs side walls and bottoms so that your drink can actually stay hot for an incredibly long period of time. When the insulation is thin then heat is able to transfer through the walls and escape so having high quality thick insulation is important. You can usually feel this insulation in the weight of the mug so if you are shopping for something blindly you could do worse than to look for a heavy mug with thick walls.

The other main thing to look for in a high end coffee mugs are to look for lids that seal tightly and is heavily insulated. Thermos lids have long been designed for thermal insulation and leak resistance as many of their products deal with food and liquid. The best lids are almost always capable of being taken apart for more thorough cleaning too because as any coffee drinker knows coffee grime can build up in lids. This grime can both be dirty but can also degrade the seal and allow hot air and liquid to leak out. If you want a coffee mug to keep temperature for five hours or more then these little leaks have to be minimized and buying a mug with a better lid is one way to do just that.
